Continue reading »]]> Jenny has worked as a senior manager for over 10 years in the non-profit service sector. She comes from Toronto where she has been the Director of Operations and Systems Management for The Four Villages Community Health Centre since March 2009.

Previously Jenny was our Executive Director of Nelson CARES Society (2006 to 2008) and successfully re-newed the operations of this long-standing organization then known as NDCRS (Nelson District Community Resource Society). We are excited about her return and look forward to her skillful leadership as we continue to provide valuable programs and support to residents of the Nelson area.

She returns to the Nelson community to which she became attached and resumes her responsibilities as Executive Director on August 29, 2011.

Continue reading »]]> The Nominations Committee of Nelson CARES Society Board of Directors is interested in hearing from individuals who are interested in volunteering for a two-year term on the Board.
This is an exciting opportunity to be involved with a well established social non-profit society providing a variety of supports and services for needy, but deserving citizens of Nelson.
Board Members of nCs commit to attend monthly meetings and participate in at least one Board Committee. The time commitment for a Board member can vary, but on an average is between 5-8 hours a month (including attendance at a 2 hour Board meeting) Volunteers and members of the community are also encouraged to submit names of those who may be interested in being a board member.

The Board of Directors meets approximately once per month on the third Wednesday evening of the month.We gather at 5:30 at the Society office on Vernon Street to share a pot-luck meal before the business begins.

Board committees meet as they determine at a time convenient for its members.

Major Responsibilities:
• Adhere to the bylaws, policies and objects of the Society as described in the Society’s documents
• Organizational leadership and advisement
• Formulation and oversight of policies and procedures
• Financial management including approval and oversight of the annual budget
• Oversight of program development
• Fundraising and public relations

Expectations of board members:
• Attend and participate in meetings and special events on a regular basis
• Participate on one of board committees; serve on ad-hoc committees as necessary
• Be alert to member needs and concerns that can be addressed by nCs mission, objectives, and programs
• Help communicate and promote nCs mission and programs
• Become familiar with nCs finances, budget, and financial/resource needs
• Understand the policies and procedures of nCs

Qualifications:
Board members have a sincere interest in the well-being of those in need. We believe Nelson has a responsibility to ensure that:
• Everyone has adequate and safe housing
• Everyone has access to support and representation when they need it
• Everyone has adequate means and resources to participate fully in community life
• Everyone takes responsibility for environmental stewardship

Continue reading »]]> We have kicked off our 2011 fundraising campaign with an envelope stuffing party at our Boardroom. With the help of Board members, staff members and Katimavik volunteers we prepared almost 7500 letters to be delivered in Nelson, Proctor/Balfour, North Shore, and the Slocan Valley.

“You may be surprised (or not) to know that, in Nelson, 335 people per week are in need of emergency food, that 300 people per year use the Stepping Stones homeless shelter and a large percentage of them stay for 30 days or more, that over 130 people per day access the Salvation Army’s free food, laundry, and shower services, and that just under 600 people per year access The Advocacy Centre for assistance with applying for welfare or disability benefits or to deal with other poverty-related issues.”
