Earth Matters

Check out the Earth Matters website for current details on these and other projects

Earth Matters is an environmentally and socially focused organization that has been providing “in the ground” projects in Nelson since 1995. Earth Matters developed two social enterprise businesses to support the youth initiatives that were on going in the community, including The ECO Centre and Recycling Pick up Services, as well as a variety of workshops and education programs.

Earth Matters also developed a Community Composting plan to respond to the overwhelming demand for residential and commercial composting services in our area.

Social enterprises are a way for non-profit organizations to support their community work while reducing the dependency for grant funding to sustain multi-year projects. Earth Matters ECO Centre is at 563 Ward Street, under the blue awnings of Ward Street Place in downtown Nelson, BC.

The ECO Centre will be the “go to” place in Nelson for everything compost.

Check out the ECO Centre for upcoming workshops, helpful composting tips and information, as well as a variety of compost bins to get you started. During the 2011 summer months, the ECO Centre will be “on location” at the weekly Wednesday Baker Street Markets and the Saturday Cottonwood Markets, as well as the three Friday night Marketfests.  Come see our worm compost in action, or talk to our local composting expect, Heather.

Volunteering Opportunities:

Earth Matters is always looking for volunteers who want to help out with our many projects, especially summer help in the two community gardens.  Cottonwood Herbal Demonstration Garden is a great place to learn about local, medicinal and herbal plants and the Hendryx Street Forest Garden is a great place to see a local ecosystem at work.

If you’d like to join Earth Matters or help out with some garden work, contact Alison at 250-352-6011, ext 15, or email alison@nelsoncares.ca
