Nelson CARES Society (NCARES) is a not-for-profit organization that provides programs and initiatives housing, employment, legal information and support services. The Advocacy Centre provides legal information and advocacy to low-income residents of the West Kootenay region and supports to victims of relationship and sexual violence.
Job Summary: The Community Based Victim Services (CBVS) Support Worker provides emotional support, referrals, information related to the justice system and advocacy to adult victims of violence in relationships, sexual assault, criminal harassment and survivors of childhood physical and sexual abuse; child and youth victims of physical and sexual abuse; child and youth witnesses of violence in relationships.

COLDEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR 2026

Nelson CARES Society’s Coldest Night of the Year fundraising event happening on Saturday, Feb 28th will have hundreds of Nelsonites walking together in the chilly, dark streets. Each person has asked their friends, family and co-workers to support their walk with a donation. Everything raised goes directly to support the Ready for Home program that operates out of Ward Street Place.

In 2012, Ready for Home was designed to support Ward Street Place tenants in maintaining their housing. The program offers wrap-around support to individuals who are often coping with multiple challenges. Our goal is to disrupt the cycle of homelessness by ensuring safe and stable housing for individual tenants while working one-on-one with them to meet them where they’re at. The Ready for Home Housing Support Worker helps tenants navigate government, healthcare and support documents as well as many other needs. Ward Street Place is home to an increasing number of senior and palliative individuals, and has an ever growing waitlist.

“Over the past three years in this role, I have had the privilege of providing support to tenants at Ward Street Place while building meaningful relationships within this diverse and vibrant community. With the generous support of the Coldest Night of the Year fundraisers, we have hosted countless meals and community events that foster connection, reduce isolation, and support tenants’ mental health and overall well-being. In today’s challenging economic climate, it is more important than ever to offer individualized support and advocacy to help our folks navigate complex social systems and access essential services. I am honoured to work within such a supportive community to help provide wraparound supports that promote a sense of belonging, stability, and dignity, alongside housing security.”

Nelson CARES Society is so thankful to the community for their continued support of this program through their donations to the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser. The walkers, donors, volunteers, and sponsors make this event a success every year and every year the funds raised support the tenants at Ward Street Place through the Ready for Home program’s activities.

North Shore Inn: Supportive Housing Worker (Casual)

The Supportive Housing Worker (SHW) will work to assist tenants/residents of Nelson CARES housing program. The job will focus on support services in conjunction and collaboration with the North Shore Inn Program Manager. Specifically, the SHW will offer support services as needed, including life skills support, accessing medical services and addictions treatment and/or mental health services. The SHW will be part of a housing team involving the North Shore Inn Program Manager and the Affordable Housing Director.
