ABOUT NELSON CARES SOCIETY
Structure
Nelson CARES (NCARES) is a British Columbia registered non-profit society with federal charitable status. It has been part of the Nelson community for 50 years. NCARES operates under a policy governance model which means the Directors have no involvement in the day-to-day operations of the society. The Directors are volunteers representing the community. In collaboration with the Executive Director (ED), the Board establishes the framework for operations though a strategic planning process and creation of governance policies.
Staffing
Reporting directly to the Executive Director are ten managers who lead a staff of over 150 unionized and non-unionized employees.
Finances
As at March 31, 2024, total assets were $46.6 million with Tangible Capital Assets of $42.6 million the majority of which are buildings providing affordable housing. For the 2024-25 fiscal year revenues and expenses are budgeted at $11.8 million.
Programs
Services for Community Living (SCL) provides support for people with developmental disabilities and complex health care needs to live fully in the community. Through SCL, Nelson CARES Society provides persons centered support and assistance for adults in three group homes in Nelson.
The Advocacy Centre provides advocacy to individuals as well as workshops and presentations on legal issues. Our work and the materials we produce focus on topics such as welfare, family law, tenancy, women’s safety and poverty survival. Our advocacy services are free of charge.
Custom Fit Inclusion & Employment Services (CFIT) supports adults with diverse abilities to secure employment and build the life they desire. Our person-centered service enhances community participation in recreational and volunteer activities as well as paid employment.
Kootenay Seniors is a program of Nelson CARES Society. The goal is to provide supports that allow seniors to live with dignity and joy, participate in their communities and remain in their own homes as long as possible.
Stepping Stones, a 24/7 emergency shelter when there is nowhere else to turn provides hot meals, a warm, dry bed and safety to hundreds of Kootenay residents every year.
Affordable Housing at five locations:
Ward Street Place, affordable SRO living for single adults in Nelson’s downtown.
Cedar Grove Estates, independent Living for Seniors, Persons with Disabilities, and Families.
Copper Mountain Court, a family complex with 2-bedroom apartment units and three and four-bedroom town homes.
Hall Street Place, affordable rental apartments providing housing for low to moderate income families and seniors.
Lakeside Place, affordable rental apartments for seniors (55 plus) and people with disabilities.
Projects
Ready for Home, the goal of which is to intervene in the cycle of homelessness and work one-on-one with individuals to maintain stable affordable housing within the Nelson CARES’ stock of housing.
Nelson Committee on Homelessness, brings together various community organizations seeking solutions to break cycles of homelessness. We believe through communication and collaboration among various government, business and service organizations we can create meaningful change.
Job Summary
The Executive Director’s key responsibility is the financial and organizational health of Nelson CARES. The organizational focus is compassion for the people we serve. This includes providing opportunities for transformation in our clients’ lives and providing access to supports and advocacy for the vulnerable in our community. The job is client centered.
The care and wellbeing of the staff is crucial and the ED works with managers on recruitment and retention methods that support program services and staff health.
The most important traits of the ED are vision, passion, collaboration and perseverance. The ED is engaged in the community and fosters partnerships with funders, staff and other agencies providing services in Nelson and area.
The ED is accountable for planning, organizing and evaluating the functions of Administration, Finance, Human Resources, Public Relations, Communications and Fund Raising. The ED serves as a resource to the Board and assists Managers in developing strategies, goals and policies consistent with the mission and purpose of the Society.
All duties and responsibilities are undertaken in a collaborative manner with the support of the program managers and the applicable administrative and financial staff.
Compensation $125,000 – $135,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and skills.
