Dear Neighbour,
Nelson CARES Society has received funding from BC Housing and other sources to redevelop Lakeside Place, an affordable housing development located at 805 Nelson Avenue (at the corner of Nelson and Kokanee Avenues). It is our goal that this new building will help address the need for affordable housing in our community, while at the same time creating an attractive building that will complement and add value to the neighborhood.
The proposed redevelopment will involve the demolition of the current buildings on the site, a functionally and physically obsolete former motel that currently provide 20 units of substandard affordable rental housing. A new, four-storey, wood-frame building will replace the old development, providing 47 modern and affordable rental apartments. 42 one- and two-bedroom apartments are designed for seniors of low and moderate incomes, and 5 units will house adults with disabilities at risk of homelessness. The project also seeks to provide improved landscaping along the closed portion of Nelson Avenue. Parking will be provided underground.
A community open house is planned for the fall to seek feedback from the community on the proposal, and we invite you to drop in to learn more about the project. The open house will take place between 4 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, September 27 in the Osprey Room of the Best Western Plus Baker Street Inn at 153 Baker Street, in Nelson.
We are also reaching out to neighbors in the vicinity of the proposed building to offer one-on-one meetings where we can update you about our plans, answer any questions you have, and hear about any of your concerns. We will be offering these meetings on Tuesday, September 19th from 3:00pm to 4:00pm and Thursday, September 21st from 4:30pm to 5:30pm at Nelson CARES Society, 521 Vernon Street, Nelson. Please contact me by phone at 250.352.6011 ext. 13 or by email at jrobinson@nelsoncares.ca if you would like to meet with us. You may provide any comments to me by email or phone.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Jenny Robinson
